Canary Wharf – located to the East in London E14 on the banks of the meandering Thames – is the UK’s second key financial centre, alongside the City of London.
Canary Wharf is by most standards a remarkable place. Regenerated from the derelict wastelands of the old London Docks some 30 years ago, Canary Wharf contrasts markedly to other, established areas of London. The glass and steel of skyscrapers is built on the footprint of the old docklands. This allows Canary Wharf to retain its connection both to the water and its heritage, whilst creating very interesting large, open spaces around the office buildings.
In some ways Canary Wharf resembles the office district of a large American city, but without the density or the intensity. Physically separated from the rest of the capital and partially surrounded by the meandering River Thames, Canary Wharf can feel like a mini-city in its own right.
